Imaging Entire Continents with Dask: Sentinel-2
About this event
Kirill Kouzoubov, Senior Software Engineer at Geoscience Australia, joins Coiled to discuss patterns for large-scale temporal processing of geospatial data using Dask.
Many teams are using xarray and Dask as the computational backbone for Earth Observation. At Geoscience Australia, Kirill and his team have these libraries to compute cloud-free Sentinel-2 Geometric Median and Median Absolute Deviations mosaics over the entire continent of Africa!
What was their process like? Why are Dask and xarray the best tools for this case? What are some challenges they faced? And, what else did they need to process the entire Sentinel archive over the whole continent?
After attending, you’ll know:
- How to access large public datasets of Earth Observation imagery in the cloud and how to leverage Dask to speed things up!
- How to apply arbitrary (as in non-Dask) per-pixel temporal processing without running out of RAM or spending all your time on I/O, and
- Some things to watch out for when using public cloud to avoid bill shocks
