About Matthew

Matthew Rocklin is the CEO of Coiled, the scalable Dask-based cloud platform. Rocklin is also the initial author of Coiled’s underlying technology, Dask. Dask is the leading Python-native solution for distributed computing.

Matthew founded Coiled to increase accessibility to computation, accelerate data science, and improve sustainability within the Python data science community.

Prior to founding Coiled, Matthew worked on Dask at Anaconda and then NVIDIA where his teams focused on accelerating Dask through parallel computing and GPUs while ensuring general health and efficiency within the ecosystem.

Matthew is active in community service, especially in open source, for organizations like CZI and Google Summer of Code, and in environmental computing, such as his involvement as a founding member of Pangeo, whose mission is to develop open-source analysis tools for ocean, atmosphere, and climate science.

While Rocklin is primarily known for his work on Dask, he also contributes across the Python ecosystem engaging and maintaining dozens of libraries.

Matthew is a frequent speaker at many technical, academic, and industry events, such as: PyData, SciPy, Google Next, Bloomberg, NASA JPL, and ICML. He is also an author on data science for O’Reilly Media, and is currently writing a book on Dask to be released in 2022.

He has a Doctorate of Philosophy in Computer Science from the University of Chicago, and a Bachelors in Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley.
